I guess the NYPO could have persuaded quite a few fine players owning/playing huge tubas to play during the period between the retirement of Mr. Deck and the audition for a new tenured player. They hired a player playing the 19" bell and 0.689" bore Conn 54J. To my knowledge they didn’t sell their tickets at discount rates during that period.

I hardly would go for a Conn 5XJ, if I went for a CC. But still I think the best samples are fine tubas hard to outgrow for somebody asking for guidance here. I rather see two other potential explanations. There is the ever infectious tuba-itch, which I as a collector shall be the last one to blame anybody for. There also may be the less obvious agenda about getting rid of a less than lucky sample of the Conn 52J.

What I read from some TubeNetters is, that they feel themselves well equipped, I they have 4 tubas: large and small basses plus large and small contrabasses. In that context the 52J might be too much of a medium contrabass. Other TubeNetters follow a one tuba for all jobs strategy. In that context a good 52J wouldn’t be a bad choice.

I know this is stupid but what is a contrabass and a peddelnote?I looked on wickapedia but not a clear cut answer..also what is lipping a note?? thanks.........Bigbob http://www.rgisculptures.com" target="_blank

Contrabass: CC and BBb tubas, as opposed to bass tubas in F or Eb.

pedal note: usage varies, but usually here means the 1st partials, the rarely used absolute bottom end - so, on a BBb tuba, the Bb below the Bb below the bass clef, and descending as far as valves permit. Wikipedia refers to this as a pedal tone.

lipping: forcing pitch up or down from where it would naturally come out. (This might actually involve breath as well as lip, the name isn't necessarily a guide to how to do it.)
