That is a great looking pair! (of tubas )
Hope you have fun with them; I've been wanting to play on one of those little cerveny Fs for a while now.
Thanks! I've got to say...this tuba is reminding me just how MUCH I like rotary tubas. The Marzan is a great, great tuba. And definitely an American sound. But I think the German rotary sound is just what works best for me, and what my brain seems wired for. I'm seriously reconsidering what I want to do now. If I could ADD a rotary CC to my stable (like a Miraphone 188), that would be great. But no way I can have 3 tubas right now.
One more picture to share... I received my gig bag from Cronkhite this week, so here's a shot of the Cerveny and Marzan bags together. Kind of goofy looking angle on the picture I guess, but it's a nice pair. Great bags, wish I'd have bought one long ago for my 1291. These are really comfortable to carry around. The Cerveny is a very nice and compact fit in the bag. And really light! Will see plenty of use this summer.

I just received the red brass version of the 653, called the 753. I had Robb Stewart redrill all the linkage screw holes in the rotor eccentric nuts (stop arms) a bit closer to the center. He also replaced the strong and brittle rotor springs with softer springs. It cost me $200, and totally fixed the too-long-throw problem on all the rotors. Now that I know it works, I'm going to try to pressure Cerveny to do them all like that. A new Cerveny F cimbasso should arrive this week, and we'll try that treatment on it as well.
Hey, Bort! You and I have matched sets . . . My B&M 5520 is a dead-ringer for your Marzan, now there's a surprise ! What's the bell diameter on your Marzan?

Bell is 19". My tuba is 40 years old, believe it or not! I'm working on getting a good picture for Tuba Tinker's Marzan web page.
That's a nice looking stable, bort. How are the ergonomics of the Marzan? I played for very briefly (a week or two) a Conn 2J, and found the diagonal position of the valves necessitated holding the horn at an angle that was uncomfortable for my supporting hand. I would really like to try out a Marzan though, despite the valve set-up.

I've been asked about the valve angle a few times. I never really think about it, and it doesn't bother me at all. I don't feel like I'm holding my tuba at any weird angle (though we do all hold our tubas at *some* angle.
When I first got the tuba, it was more noticeable to me that the valve block is a little high up on the tuba, compared to my old Miraphone 1291. You get used to it real quick, not a big deal. But here's a picture, nonetheless. Look at the difference in position of the valve block. Overall height and leadpipe position is the same for both. Bell size is comparable, though the Marzan has larger bows and a different bell taper than the 1291.
