Steve- No on the ®, its just me being a smart-***. But, it is a term I came up with long before I introduced it to Tubenet back in Sept of 2005. My shop website has always felt pictures were better then a truck load of boring text and because so, we eventually coined it as horn-dorn. I have always encouraged other Repair Techs to be proud of there work and show off there creations as I was encouraged to do back when I was new to the trade.

Oh yeah, the tuba will be shipped to New York City. Hows that for vague?

Two questions for you :
1) When you replace the plating do you lose the very fancy engraving on the bell ? Is it just etched in the plateing or does it go all the way through to the metal?

2) If you do lose it how do you replace it ?

Most of the time I restore an instrument that is to be replated, I am careful and do my best to avoid damaging the engraving during dent removal and polishing. It can be plated over in silver or gold which will actually enhance the engraving if the original work was done well. In the case of many of the old horns I am asked to restore, a little touch-up engraving work is often needed prior to plating. The tuba shown had a number of horrible scrapes and scars that were quite deep and went all the way across the engraving and right through the middle. It required a good deal of corrective work that was performed before and after bead-blasting, prior to silver plating.

Dan, first of all it is fantastic every time we have the pleasure to see some of your great work.

Maybe this is already talket about earlier, but I have a question about engraving which you partly already answered. I wish to understand it right so... If I have an old horn that is very hard buffed so there is almost nothing left from the original engraving, is it even then possible to restore the engraving? Or, is there a way, i.e. is it better, to 'fill' the original engraving with something to be able to make another one over the old one?

Hey! If York #3 was made of barbecued spare-ribs would you eat it then? I know I would...heck, I'd have seconds! And I'd polish it off with a tall, cool Budweiser! Would you eat it?....It's a simple quesion!

Beautiful work Dan!
bloke wrote:' great work as always, and I believe it is much smarter to keep these old instruments in BBb, as there are plenty of newer ones in this size available in CC and very few new ones like this available in BBb.
I too concur.

It was heartening to see that the old BBb bugle was not compromised. I'm sure that this tuba sounds like thunder.

Wow! That is a gorgeous horn! What ever the cost to do that it was worth every penny. Someone is going to have something to cheris and pass down for that horn's 3rd and 4th generations. Incredible work!
