I'm with Rick and Joe B.
I'm a player. no *ist for me. I'll leave that to the pros.
Pick an instument and be a player. Going the *ist route always seamed kind of snobish.
Guitar, piano, violin and such, sounds semi-normal but still snobish to me. I know lots of people happy to be guitar players, piano players, and fiddle players

I've always thought that tubist was a poor choice.
What is a tubist? Someone who makes tubs? Maybe someone who makes tubes? Whereas "tubaist" leaves little doubt as to the reference.
In explaining this to the folks at Merriam Webster some years ago, they responded in agreement with me in principle, however current usage in print dictated that the accepted word usage was tubist...
...so there you are, fellow tubists.

Didn't Bill Bell write/arrange a solo called The Tubateer Polka? He seems like someone who would know the proper terminology.

I understand that Mr. Bell is not answering such questions these days.

Both are correct, as is Tuba Player (sorry I left that off the poll). I was simply curious what folks preferred.
I do kinda like the suggestion of Tubateer. I mean who can argue with Mr. Bell. I just wonder if some will prefer
TuBAT eer .

I understand. My comment was more for the croud who are convinced that one or the other is incorrect. I still prefer 'blatweasle' myself
