Without the right information, or even worse with the wrong information. The "blowing the airstream down" story was a giant loser for me. Of course I have only my stupidity to blame because I bought that when it wasn't working, but for for a ridiculously long time normal high range was struggle for me. If you're like I was, having trouble that you can't seem to practice your way out of, just consider the possibility that some of the things you're doing that are supposed to be right, are really wrong, for you. Don't do those things, do the opposite, whatever. See what happens.

As for picking up a higher pitched brass instrument - great idea if it works, but for someone who doesn't have the spare money and time for a second instrument, I wonder if it would be the same or better to just buy a bass trombone mouthpiece, like the Kelly 1.5G (back in production!), and stuff it in the tuba with some plastic wrapped around it to make up for the different shank size. This is not going to sound good, but it gives you a chance to feel around in those high frequencies with a little more mouthpiece support, like training wheels when you're learning to ride a bicycle. (I didn't have training wheels, and I know a lot of people think they're stupid, but the point is to learn to ride and not to make those people happy!)
