naming instruments

I started on a Bbb tuba named "Heinrich" after Heinrich Hermuth from Gelsenkirchen, Germany, who had built it maybe 50 years ago. Later I purchased a MW 46, which was named "Chantal", because that reflected the quality of my relationship to the two horns. One was the reliable buddy to hang out and have fun with, and the other... aahm...

I now own a PT20. She definitely is female, but hasnÂ´t given me her name yet, although weÂ´re dating a whole lot and Chantal is getting jealous , Heh heh...
One man in band named his old, battered kaisertuba "Bertha" after "die dicke Bertha", a giant train-mounted cannon made by Krupp. He sure tried to play up to that concept.

I have never named a horn...although, if I ever have my Marzan overhauled, I will have a elephant engraved on it with the name "Shirley Anne" under it (giving my horn the "Doc" treatment) and I guess I will call it that from that day on. I also like the idea of engraving the known owners on a plaque like Lee S. did.

Gotta watch the translations. My German band toured the Rhine region three years ago on a bus with "ich leiben Dicke"

I never named a horn.I did name a Gibson guitar I played in bars for 20 years.I called it "Ralph"after a guy because some nights I would whip it and some nights it would whip me.

After reading my previous quote, I realized I have to backtrack a little. I often referred to (don't own it anymore) my Conn 3J as my Conn. Whenever I would mention that, my wife, who knows I am a big Star Trek fan/geek/whatever, would always yell "Kahn!!!" the way Captain Kirk did in Star Trek II (after Kahn trapped him on planet).

I guess that makes me a bit . . . odd, too.

My Current (and one former) Horns

"MaBell" - Yamaha 321

"BabyBell" - Besson Soverign Baritone

"Isabell" - Canadian Brass Willson (2975)

"Lizabel" -Yamaha 642

"Nehlybel" - Cerveny 546-4MR (since traded in for a Bach 42)

"Franz Joseph" - (Oooold Cerveny 4 valve, front action, ajustable tension, graduated diameter valves, all the goodies, and 115 years old...)

"Skippy" - Buescher 5-valve double bell, and my FIRST horn.

(and one each unnamed, Besson euph, Willson 2900 and another Yamaha 642).

My wife named my 5/4 CC Rudy Meinl. She named it Winston, but not after Winston Morris. Not really sure where she got it, other than an instinct.

I'm going to name my Miraphone 186 BBb, Mazie. Thaqt is short for amazing, because I am absolutely amazed that she will let me play (not being able to hear, and all). She never lets me down on range (well, almost never) and her sound is THERE!!

(I like calling it or one of its parts, esp. the valves, a piece or pieces of crap)
