Actually, now that I said it, I might try some time. I have no use for an actual tuba mute, but it would be a fun little project given the right materials.

Kentucky Fried Chicken buckets are easier to handle and the grease actually enhances the sound.
Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?

1) Logs are solid. Mutes are not.
2) Is it possible to turn a cylindrical log into a conical shape with a table saw? Maybe, but it would be damned dangerous without various jigs and difficult even with.
3) All in all, sounds hard to me.
Use the saw to cut the log lengthwise into thin strips, then cut the strips to a tapered shape such that, side by side, they form a cone of the desired proportions. Attach them to interior wood ferrules. A log narrow enough to work on with a table saw would be 3-4 inches in diameter, which may not be how you get good quality wood, I don't know.

3) All in all, sounds hard to me.
1) Drill it out, or get extra thick corks so enough sound gets out regardless. Bar stools and music folders and towels are solid, all of which have been mentioned in this thread.
2) A couple of the table saws at my school can be raised high enough for a full log, maybe 2 ft or so. And it doesn't have to be perfectly conical or turned in any way, I actually imagined something shaped more like a Facet mute (http://michaelclayville.com/wp-content/ ... 24989.jpeg" target="_blank" target="_blank)
3) Sure, it would be a challenge. But I'm guessing that you could buy some damn good supplies and maybe even some proper tooling and still come out with a good, cool looking mute you MADE YOURSELF for well under the price of a new tuba mute that may, or may not, fit your tuba (or more than one of your tubas, who wants to spend $300/mute so they can have a mute for more than one tuba, like bass and contrabass?)

Say what? You can set up your saw to cut a 2 foot depth? Less than half of a table saw's blade can rise above the table, so I guess we're talking about a blade well over 4 feet in diameter!?

I allowed for 4 inch logs because you could square them up and end up with something just under 3 inches, which most saws could do, but ... of course rip sawing a log brings in other issues besides just depth.

I saw the Joker make a tuba mute out of Batman and Robin with one of those things...

If we assume that by "table saw" he means "band saw" and by "two ft or so" he means "sixteen inches or so" then that part of the post makes more sense.

All right, and that band saw would have a table likely enough, so there you go. But ... if anyone's milling 16" logs in shop, hope you will attach photos to this thread.

You're probably right, I'm not a woodworking student, just use the shop from time to time. And the 2ft was a rough guess, it's been at least a couple months since I've been in there.

Point well taken! At the risk of being banned from the annals of Tubenet I submit the rather tame male Tubenet Jock Strap. I worked hard to avoid anything with either a real person or a mannequin to keep things PG. I figured the ladies would prefer something more athletic than well..... I'll stop here. Merry Tubenet to all!
