Re: Army Band workshop Jan 30-Feb 2nd, 2019
I'm planning to be there, partnering with Buddy Roger's Music of Cincinatti. I'm not sure what I'll be bringing yet, but besides a field repair shop, I'm planning to bring a couple of nice CC tubas, a very nice 3+1 compensating EEb, and whatever else I can get ready by then. If you're looking for something in particular let me know, as I just might have it!

Well that was nice. By 11am the place had thinned out and I got to try everything I wanted to, that showed up... Several venders lost a tuba or two.
I wanted to try the Wessex Viverna/Dragon, but lost.
The Grand is one BAT though!!
The BMB 744 is also a worthy instrument.
The winner with money no object; Miraphone Hagen, the 191 is very nice too. I did not like the piston version or it’s clone that I tried.
I tried the GR51 it sounds and feels great. But it’s no lightweight.
I liked the Eastmans a lot. Their GR51 copy was lost. But the larger bore instrument, that I liked in years past, impressed me again. The 2341 copy is excellent. Their 3/4 offering is nice.
The JP379B piggy-like tuba is really nice, smaller but doesn’t compromise nearly as much as the 3/4 piston model gives up.
If I were to get something a little smaller and lighter than I have now with a better low end it’s a toss up between the Eastman 2341 copy and the JP Piggy.
I’m reviewing when my exclusive Mack Brass Artiste contract expires... but I’ll have to drive down and play some of those newer models first...

Well, I wasn't there, but I figured that Lee was going to bring it. Maybe he didn't? Maybe he already sold it?

Which one is the new one? Did it have the red brass bell?Mark Finley wrote:Wessex. Holy cow, that new euphonium they have is fantastic. It's Lightweight, has a singing tone, and great intonation. They have a winner on their hands. It's not same old same old in any way.

This a completely new all hand-hammered euphonium, the EP600 sharing no parts with the existing Dolce. At present Wessex are having the prototype evaluated by some top professionals before going into production.Leland wrote:Which one is the new one? Well that blows! Sorry to hear that...BuddyRogersMusic wrote:Unfortunately, Lee was snowed in and unable to attend, as was Dave Surber from DEG/Willson. There were a few obstacles to this year's workshop but turnout was still pretty good.

Thanks! Very curious on how it sounds. I wish they offered in 16 or 17 inch bell.Mark Finley wrote:that was another tuba that didn't make it. Stuck in france
They said they will have one at TMEA. I'm looking forward to trying it

Interesting. Thanks for the info. Haven't been able to play either so I appreciate hearing what you thought of it.Mark Finley wrote:Yes. I thought it was a comfortable tuba to hold and I liked the design, but as far as pitch goes I liked the Eastman and packer versions more.
