95% of the time I use a PT-90 regardless of which tuba.

For what are 'really' either ophicliede, cimbasso, French C tuba, F tuba, or euphonium parts I use a PT-65 to reduce the tubbiness in the sound.

If I want additional weight to the tone, I use an MF-2.

Mouthpieces

Post by jeopardymaster »

I've been using the Wick 3L that came with my Besson 983 as my default mouthpiece for almost 10 years. Absolutely MAKES the 983, also matches the 184 very nicely, and I find it conforms extremely well to my Gnagey. The only time I have to pull a slide on the Gnagey/Wick is to get rid of condensation. For really heavy, low loud stuff I might use a Kellyberg, and I just got a "Chief" mouthpiece from Lee Stofer that I like a lot; and for really light or high work I have used a Mirafone C2. But 90% I just play the 3L and leave it at that. I recently picked up a Neptune - the 3L feels pretty good on it too, but I suspect a Rose Orch or C4 would work as well.

Old, beat-up PT 64 on my 184.
Doug Elliot parts on my 182 F. (don't remember what they are, but they work.)
51D on euphonium.

Indeed. Thanks. I just needed something more broad than the Wick 2. For me, it was a little stuffy in the upper register, where the Wick 1 for my Besson and Wick 1L for my Miraphone are great. I also get better intonation on my Miraphone, including being able to center on pitch the 5th partial notes without alternate fingerings.

PT-48 on my Holton and Conn 14K.

Doug Elliott 132-2N-T6 on my York Master and Miraphone. Sometimes just a plain Conn Helleberg on the Miraphone.

Mike Finn MF-4 on my B&S Symphonie and Yamaha 621 F tubas.

Kellyburg on the fiberglass Martin (of course).

Steven Mean SM3 or SM4 (depending on which one I can find at the time) on my old Besson euphonium.

Conn Helleberg & clear Kellyberg now.

I'm a former Bach user - 18, 24AW, & 12, but I get much better sound & more air through my li'l Amati with the 'bergs.

Bob1062 wrote:How do you like that combo?
It works fine for me, but I approach them AS 3/4 bass euphoniums, and not as 6/4 anythings, so I suppose my expectations ARE higher in range... :D

I have a dozen or so, and several tubas that each seem to have their favorite mouthpiece. But I don't do any legit music and have very modest abilities, so rather than get into a detailed review of each mouthpiece, let me just say that if I had to pick one of them to do everything, I'd take the Conn 2 or Conn 7B.

(That's picking one, because past the rim they're identical as far as I can detect. My 7B looks good with my Pan American Eb giant bass because its gold plate matches the gold wash bell, but the Conn 2 looks better with the sousaphone.)

On the Yorkbrunner I use a Giddings and Webster Bayamo, with a Schilke Helleberg II as backup.

On my Yamaha YFB-621 F I'm using a Giddings and Webster Bora, with a Mirafone C4 as the backup.

On bass trombone I use the G & W Churada.

On trumpet the G & W M2, which is discontinued by GREAT!
