Be prepared to enjoy your lessons with both Gene and Rex. They are both wonderful people. I still am inspired by my lessons with them (especially Rex), even though it has been since the early '90s. If you have a lesson at Northwestern, check out the practice rooms, some have (or least they did), windows facing Lake Michigan, very cool.

Make sure to take an Arbans

Ditto. Rex is one of the coolest musicians in our field. And you will learn from him.

Do other people feel like it's bad form to ask someone how much they charge for lessons right away? When I've wanted to take lessons with someone, I always felt weird about asking their price just because I didn't want them to think that was important.

Never thought it inappropriate to ask the cost of a lesson up front. Especially in the case of people who have been teaching a long time, it wont be a difficult question for them to answer, and it takes the business side away before the lesson so you can focus on the important stuff instead.
