Interesting reading about Jacobs and Kleinhammer. I studied with Kleinhammer for a time in the '80s, and I never heard him swear, either. He did tell a pretty good joke once about a doctor doing exams on three women...I'd better not tell it here.
Jamie Hafner is in semi-retirement in Brevard, NC. He and his wife built a beautiful house on a mountainside just above the grounds of Brevard Music Center. For a few years after his retirement from U of Toledo, he was Director of Education at BMC. Now, he spends his time cooking, entertaining, enjoying the view from his deck with a glass of wine, and developing his skills as an instrument repairman. Last summer, he had just put a computer lathe/milling machine into his garage. I'm looking forward this summer to seeing what new toys he might have. He still owns both of his tubas, a red brass Sanders and a 4/4 Hirsbrunner, but he hasn't played in some years.

Man, I was around 78-80 at Brevard--I remember the Naughty Marietta and the Aida performance, too. wow, scary memories!
I see Jamie Hafner a couple of times a year nowadays, and it's always good to see him. Great teacher, player, etc.
He was given a lifetime award by ITEA a few years back when Symphonia had their summer session at Brevard--great to see him honored in that way.
and to the other matter at hand.....
The run-on sentence version of the Credo was always the source of competition not only for just saying it in one breath but also for belching it in one.....

I talked with Ed Kleinhammer a few weeks ago. He's doing well, maybe to well. Seems he has taken of with his family to Hawaii!
There is absolutely no way that Ed Kleinhammer had anything to do with this except maybe read it. Don't even consider it!
While there seems to be some uncertainty, it seems to point towards Charlie Vernon. The latest evidence is on www.jayfriedman.com where there is a photo of the CSO bone section with the creed and Yo-Yo Man. Great pix.
I am sure that the video of Charlie Vernon reading it is kept under lock and key and is being used as blackmail material. You won't get this one out of Michael Moore. I'd like to see it sometime.

Hey Dennis,
Were you a student at Brevard those summers? I was there the summers of 1979 and 1980 and don't remember meeting you. My first summer it was me, Bill Gray, Jill Coberly, and another high school gal whose name I can't seem to remember. Summer of 1980 had the same along with Steve Pharris and a bunch of other high school guys. I met Dan Satterwhite the 2nd year, actually had the good fortune of playing with him on some pretty cool rep. Anyway, always great to hear from someone from the "old" days. Jaime Hafner is a great guy. I had never seen a Hirsbrunner tuba. When I tried to play his I immediately realized that he had a 2-3 combination for a 4th valve like his old Sanders. It had me bamboozled. Man that guy could make a glorious noise!!!! He did a very nice Vaughn-Williams with Bill Pharris' band the summer of 1980 on his Hirsbrunner and made it sing. Please remember me to him next time you see him.

Jeff,
It has been 26 years this coming summer that we first met and was the last time I saw you. I trust life has been treating you well. I remember some old pictures hanging in the band room at Brevard College with a VERY young Charley Vernon in them. Must have been before he transfered down to Atlanta. Who was the great brass teacher in Atlanta up to the late 80's? I think he taught at Kennesaw College(?), and was a legend. Don Strand always spoke highly of him and said that he was Mike, Harry, and Charley's teacher before they headed up to the promised land.

Don, where the hell are you now? Yes, that certain someone shall go nameless, but what a time it was. Hope all is well. Two words: Tom Freer. Take it from there. I actually saw him when I subbed in Alabama in the early 90's. He could still belch "Eleanor Roosevelt". I think he plays in Cleveland. Drop me a note at chuckjackson1@cox.net. I have pictures, especially the summer at Brevard when they did Aida and all us "big" guys got hooked into being Spear-Carriers. I think you were playing. What a hoot.

To the Whole World:
I hereby certify that one Jeff Taylor, Master of the Bass Trombone and all around good guy, could, after consuming 3 Red, White, and Blue Beers, burp an entire chorus of the "Name Game" using the name "Chuck" and saving the crowning belch for the variation on said name. He was truly an inspired young man, who could, BTW, dent the skulls of the back two stands of violas with his Dulcet tones. I seem to remember a performance of the Frank D Minor that left a couple of little ladies crying, literally. The writer of this missive hopes that one Jeff Taylor will forgive my previous affront to his bellicose burping abilities.
To "Dandy" Don Gardo:
The Man from Nantucket limerick will forever be etched in my memory because not only was that the first time I had ever met Jaime Hafner, it was also the first time I realized he had a rather young child, and me, not being the most subtle 18 year old in the world, was brazenly singing away my favorite Dr. Dirty lyrics for a good ten minutes before he said anything. Carol Hafner didn't say a word to me until the 4th week of camp. Here is a visual for you: Dave Gentry stuck in the shower of old Boys Hill when the floor gave way under him one morning. The rest is history, I have the pictures, particularly one of a certain very respectable trombone player laughing and pointing at poor Daves travails. As for the certain lady we remember, I hope she is well. I understand she has a few kids and is living in the south. Yes, her Papa and the mouth of the south did, indeed, get unhitched.

The certain lady does live in the south, has great kids, and, unlike the rest of us, still looks exactly like she did in 1980.
Did you guys ever get in a watermelon seed-spitting fight with Jamie and Charlie? of course, it would quickly escalate into watermelon spitting. Nothing like getting a whole mouthful of watermelon propelled directly into the face by Charlie.
Believe it or not, Pianoforte, the brand new dwelling of choice in 1980, is now the worst of the worst places to be assigned! I remember being very happy to be in there, even though Tom Freer was in the bunk above me. I lived in fear of him crashing down on top of me in the middle of the night.
BTW, Don, not too long ago another certain faculty-brat cellist all grown up came to visit BMC...SHE looks exactly the same, too. What the hell happened to the rest of us? Well, after the pleasure of seeing you last summer, I can say that the years have been alot kinder to you, and to Jeff Taylor, than to me, Dave Gentry, Bill Zehfuss, or Bill Gray (bald and gray!) I can't speak for Chuck, who I haven't laid eyes on in 26 years. We definitely need a reunion! The place has changed alot..you wouldn't believe it.
Lastly, where are all the high school bass trombone players these days? I can't find ONE who wants to come this summer. I don't want to have to play in TSO myself!

Well, Dan, your wait is long over. Log onto clasicallycool.com and feast your eyes on my sorry puss. At least I married well. Reunion? My God, I don't think the place would be the same. And, yes, I ended up on the losing end of the watermelon fight, but only because I had Glenn Finch on my side. Stooooopid trumpet players. Where is Bill Gray these days? Still in Santiago?

Damn...you have gray hair, too! But you look pretty good, and yes, you did marry well.
Bill Gray left Santiago shortly after I did, to take a gig with the US Navy Band. He played for around 10 years, then took an administrative job with the band last spring. More opportunity for advancement, he said.
Glenn Finch had no sense whatsoever. Drove all the way from Tempe, then rolled his car 5 miles from BMC. I remember him looking like one of those guys in that Revolutionary War painting with the fife player and drummer. At least he could still play with a broken arm.
Jeff Taylor is all for a reunion...come on over this summer!

Bill played in the Navy Band in DC? I wonder how I missed him. I tought at the Armed Forces School of Music from 1986-1989 and auditioned there in 1988. Maybe it was later. And that gray hair shows character buddy, actually I was jet black until I got married. Do you ever run into Joe Barati down in your neck of the woods? Hey, better yet e-mail me at chuckjackson1@cox.net.

Glad to see your response on the board, Mike. I remember your father fondly after needing a big rest at a German Band Gig in the early '90's. He just kept on playing like it was no problem, and I was youngster. He put me to shame. Hope all is well in your neck of the woods and congrats on getting a new hall.
