Frankly, that's all you need to consider.

Please: No.
Ditto.

Charlie Vernon and some other well known players do not have a music degree. Study with best player/teacher you can on a regular basis and practice your b***s off.

I had dreams of going to expensive schools. I also wanted to work overseas. Some countries pay foreigners a lot of money. Indonesia, for example, pays a lot of money for anyone with a master's degree to teach any subject they need taught, to work as a living English language laboratory. Entry income there, when I started in the mid 1990s, was about $54,000--including house, car, and domestic staff (and I was just a high school band director!)

I now find myself in Vietnam. The highest paid foreigners here earn the astronomic annual income of $12,000 a year (it sounds better when you say 2.5 billion dong). With living expenses here, you would have your education paid off in about 15 years. You can buy a house here for about the same amount of money! And no one cares where you went to school.

Whatever you do, do it for yourself.

Interest

Interest - those who understand it, make it - those who don't, pay it.

Right, now, I fall into the second category.

Isn't graduate school (ie masters/doctorate degree) where you would typically rack up the debt? I don't think undergrad (tuition) should cost more than 30K total... unless you're a virtuoso and you need to jump right into a conservatory.

except most private institutions cost close to 40K a year

granted most aid packages can bring that down to about half.. or less if you're smart and talented

If you are paying to go to grad school, you aren't good enough to go to grad school.

[with a minor exemption for those who pay for the FIRST year of grad school at a ReallyReallyReallyGood grad school, with the idea of demonstrating that your crappy undergraduate record represents a phase of your life that you have now outgrown, and thus convincing them to pay for the rest of your grad school]

[three guesses on why I make allowances for that minor exception...]

And...as someone else pointed out: $30K for 4 years of quality undergraduate education? You must (still) be on drugs!

Sorry, I should have clarified that I was looking at it from the Canadian perspective... must be much different in the US.
