Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?

OK, I took the survey, for no other reason than for the hell of it. I don't make a living playing tuba or teaching it. I play because I enjoy it. And I lurk on Tubenet because occasionally I learn from those who do teach, fix horns, and play better than I do. What I don't like are those who take themselves too seriously, aren't respectful of fellow Tubenetters, and generally make themselves look like idiots with some of their remarks. That being said, most of those are in the minority. But, I do like it when those trolls get their asses handed to them.

I'll tell you honestly: After having an excellent small steak with asparagus as a side dish and a glass or two of Diet Coke with the gang after the concert (where were you, by the way?), I went home to bed. I woke up at 1:15 with pain in my upper abdomen that made be squirm. Didn't want to wake up the Redhead with tossing and turning, so I went upstairs to sit upright for a while. I messed around on the computer since it required the least mental presence. A "while" turned into six hours of writhing pain, followed by a trip to the emergency room, an ultrasound, a CT scan, heavy drugs administered by IV, a diagnosis of gall stones, some unexpected decoration of the shoulder of the Dulles Greenway on the way home, and an appointment with a surgeon next week.Rob wrote:Honestly, my real question is, why are you up at 5:00 AM on a Sunday?
That's why I was up at 5, and further why I was in a sour mood.

You wouldn't say that if you'd heard me play Russian Christmas Music Saturday night. I did exactly what I accused poor players of doing--I didn't keep up with my breathing and ran into biological necessity in the middle of the string bass cues. Wow - there really are some mean people here. I saw the same sort of thing in that Dvorak 8 thread. Rick's response was not particularly nice and I think he got an appropriate retort. But than some of you - especially "The Elephant" really took it to the next level of meaness. Especially with that "poll" that was created. There is simply no question that others were way more immature than the original poster. Some of you guys just take things way to far and out of context.
I am ready for the over the top lambasting I will probably get for writing this. I am sure based on what I wrote that I must be a middle school student with pimples who fails all his classes and goes on forums only for the purpose of finding controvertial threads who couldn't even hold a tuba much less play it. OK - now to go back and check my spelling to make sure I am not a moron on top of all that.

If you make a video of yourself holding a tuba and popping your pimples at the same time, please post a link. I enjoy looking at things like that....Stefan wrote: I am ready for the over the top lambasting I will probably get for writing this. The Elephant and I may not see eye to eye on everything, but I will agree with his assertion that college students, taken as a demographic, are an ignorant and asinine group.

In this particular case, I think one of my more embarrassing peers was just asking to be taken down a peg. However, I believe he did so unknowingly and with better intentions than we give him credit for.

You might be right, but remember some of the worst things to happen in the history of man started with the best of intentions. The problem I have with this poster is his attitude and lack of respect. You see, people act like they post. I can say this confidently because I've been fortunate enough to meet some of the people on this board and I am lucky enough to call some of them friends. Do you know what I found out about them? They act just like they type. Wayne(Schlep) is quite funny and it is VERY hard not to laugh at his jokes. Ray(TubaRay) is very matter of fact and quite funny. Also, he's a hell of a tuba player! Ken(knuxie) is full on energy and enthusiasm. I could keep going, but I think people get the point. So when someone comes on this board and is blatantly disrespectful, that just does not fly. Yes, I'm sure Mr. Denney can defend himself quite capably. I do not even know him. I have, however, heard much about him and have read quite a few of his posts. I've been reading here since 2003 and just started posting last year! In that time I've learned who knows what they're talking about and who is full of horse manure. The bottom line is that the guy was/is being a disrespectful little @@@@@ who bitches that some people don't like his survey. So in my experience, if he types like a @@@@@, chances are....Biggs wrote:Wade Rackley > "keg84"

I completely agree! Don't think I'm trying to shield the original poster. He is a @@@@@ who deserves what he gets, but I bet he doesn't even know it.

There are a couple silly questions/answer choices on his survey, but I do not get the impression that the survey was intended to start trouble. At least, nothing in that survey indicates that. Like I said in my 1st post, some people here read too much into things in a negative way. Then they crucify the person in a way over the top sort of way. Not neccesary. But it's not all their fault. This forum seems to support that kind of behavior.

Dude! I've worked at a butcher shop, too! Isn't it fun to run big chunks of liver through the bandsaw? Especially if they have a pocket of pus in the middle!nxt2laststarfighter wrote:ITS awesome that Butcher is a career option because I am in college AND I WORK AT A BUTCHER SHOP.... fun times....
I bet there are other tuba players who work or have worked in a butcher shop. We should start a butcher's tuba band. And have the Butcher's Band Polka Ball with all of the wonderful foods that can be made from animals and animal parts! Yum!

He saidThe bulk of this thread has nothing to do with the content of the silly survey, but with the content of the mind of the survey maker based on what he wrote in response to Rick's post. He revealed why he posted the survey.
Sounds like he accomplished his goal. And you were drawn right into it!Thanks though. I was trying to think of a way to mention the people who are on all the time and just look for stuff to complain about and waste everyone else's space and time on tubenet, and the rest of the internet for that matter, with negative bullshit, but I knew it wouldn't be long. Thanks for the input thou man.

Make 600 posts and then see if you think the same.MEISTERTUBA wrote:I agree, that there is a high amount of meanness on this bbs. I think that after some people who have spent so much of their time on the internet talking about tubas, they become so attached to things like these and don't want to have other people join them. It's like any club with a lot of older people on it. Even if someone new is nice and want to join in the fun, they always get picked on by certain people.
I occasionally peruse a ham radio forum. If you think this forum is mean, that forum would send you into years of therapy. And the Canon digital camera forum has meanies on it that would make Wade seem like Mother Teresa. I can cite many other examples, some of which were so challenging that I wasn't up to them. Post a dumb question on the old alt.folklore.urban newsgroup, for example, and prepare to be roasted.
The question becomes: Are the roastees better or worse off for being singed? I submit they are better off. They end up thinking more about what they write, whether they have written 6 posts or 6000 posts.
My response was not particularly sweet. But neither was it "mean", whatever that means. It was simply an honest appraisal, and advice to try again with questions that could be answered in a poll format. The reaction to my response, however, was not honest--it was blatantly dramatic. I attributed that to youth and didn't worry about it. No sense in engaging that sort of battle, and I didn't Others did on my behalf, but that was also not necessary.
Now, those of you who have post counts in the single digits, hear this: Tubenet is not a closed club. Anyone is free to participate. Each post stands on its own, but it is also interpreted in the context of everything posted by that person. That's why we have names. But don't expect to receive instant respect. It takes a while to develop a personality on a forum where all we have are words.
