-The biggist guy in the beginers band class gets put behind the tuba.

-When I was at school in the 70's, having the 5th valve in the right hand was a fad (I think).

-Oh ya, and also the 5th valve trigger for intonation.

-Actually, wasn't owning a Miraphone (out on the west coast) a fad? It seems like if you didn't own one, you weren't part of the family. (then again, I was in high school...very impressionable). It certainly stuck for a long time.

-Big bore F tubas. You all remember when B&S hit the scene...

4-40 rod is twice the diameter of 2-56 rod, and the brass tubing I encase it in is quite stiff. If you tried to squeeze those together on my tuba, you'd end up buckling them before they bend, and you'd be facing a certain amount of annoyance from the owner.

The linkages I replaced on my Miraphone were those terrible white plastic things that would have been flatly rejected by anyone who lost a multi-thousand-dollar radio-controlled helicopter because of locked-up or rattling-loose (it decides) linkage. The only thing nice about those were the turned rods.

And it wasn't a hobbyist who installed the linkages on that Sanders.
