This fine photo and its caption make me remind playing in the brass band of the Danish equivalent of Boys’ Brigade. We played on very long street and road marches to keep the beat of the column behind us. Except in one certain situation, when the music stopped and we were ordered to march without a common beat: when passing bridges.

Wow, they really stuck you next to the wall, didn't they? :)

yeaaa, they got me sunk in there pretty good, but the wall and overhang just funneled the sound out into the audience. The directors have to explicitly tell the percussionists to not set up directly under the overhang as it has the same effect just with bangs booms and clangs...honestly I don't enjoy being under that thing, I'll be up on risers at the end of this week for 2 performances of Carmina Burana :) .

Very close, Klaus, except the sousa is a York BBb, circa 1953, .658 inch (16.7 mm) bore, 25 inch (635 mm) bell. It seems not to be a classic York, but similar to a student model from one of the successors to the original York manufacturer. It is from my stable and on loan to my section-mate.

A York of that era has me suspecting a York Master by made Böhm & Meinl (a company later known as Nirschl). I am not totally unbiased here, as I have one of the large York Master BBb recording bell tubas with 4 front action pistons. B&M to my knowledge was the first European maker to make tubas and sousaphones with the true American valve block. Here the airpath angles on all pistons except the 2nd are much more open, as they in contrast to the typical European valve blocks (more or less taken directly from top valved tubas) have exits and reentries on opposite sides of the pistons.

The smallish bore is not too unlikely for a B&M as ther York Master BBb tubas came in the large 0.750" bore 4 valve versions, whereas the 3 valve versions had a much smaller bore.

This USAF Band Washington DC tuba section was together from 1983-1996. We had this pic taken at the Andrews AFB Open House in 1993. The initial use of the photo was cover art for a recording titled "Moondance" we made as a section to commemorate our 10 year anniversary as a section.

Took a look the current band line up. Jan Duga still in the section, but I am somewhat puzzled about the section being down to two members now. Has the band downsized?

Klaus

PS: Are the instruments YCB-822’s?
