Orchestral excerpts and college auditions
I am a high school senior, and i hope to major in music ed or performance at University of Houston. To audition there, I will need to perform 3 orchestral excerpts. I already can play Hungarian march well, so that is number one. If I can pull off "the trill," i would love to do Die Meistersinger. What should my third excerpt be? and just in case i can't work up the flexibility, what is a good backup for Die Meistersinger? Thanks a bunch.

i cannot quite give ride of the valkyries the just it deserves. I dont have that instant response in the low range yet. How would i be able to get my hands on the parts for Symphonic Metamorphasis, prokofiev's 5th, or romo and juliet?
And the current tuba professor is Mark Barton.

Well depending on what you decide to major, you may not have to use orchestral excerpts. When I auditioned there as an Ed. major I used the first mvmt. of Gregson and the second mvmt. of the Broughton. I do seem to recall though that excerpts are required for performance. And if you do get in they are mandatory for auditions for chair placement. Here is what was required for this year:
Hungarian March
Prokofiev 5th
Meistersinger
Ride
Arutunian Tuba Concerto Mvmt. 1&2
So to do any of those excerpts for your audition would be quite good considering that they asked for them this year. Good luck!

I would avoid The Ride. A friend of mine did it for a conservatory audition. The school had three trombonists from a major orchestra teaching, and all three of them told him to play the excerpts three completely different ways.
I personally like to hear Meistersinger, Tchaikovsky #4 and Mahler 1 from younger players. They all focus more on fundamentals.
p.s. I am at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Mike and Ralph, email me sometime!
