Hey folks,

Does anyone know if there is a preferred key for D & T?

I originally though of CC, but then as I looked at it, I began to think that the range could seem to imply F. Not so much that it goes so high, but that it does not go too low.

Is there any kind of authoritative answer?

CC for sure. The orchestration is supremely thick, and a contrabass tuba gives the right color.

All of the big important stuff is in C major or C minor, for the most part. Much better to be comfy and broad in those moments than sacrifice your sound for a slightly easier time on the high notes that likely won't really be a big deal.
Same deal with something like Carmina Burana - you need to big d minor playing to be comfortable, so it isn't worth considering the small horn for those few moments in the Tavern.
