Don Butterfield's sextet

Post by jbaylies »

Every bio of Don mentions that he led his own sextet for a 1955 album on Atlantic Records and played at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival.

Is the 1955 album available anywhere? It's not listed here: https://www.jazzdisco.org/atlantic-reco ... aphy-1955/

Is there a recording of the performance at Newport?

Here is the program for the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival. http://www.rirocks.net/Band%20Articles/ ... 201958.htm

Don's quintet played on Saturday at 2:30. There is also a documentary of the festival "Jazz on a Summers Day," though Don's group is not mentioned in the descriptions I have seen. Though Wikipedia identifies that Eli's Chosen Six, from Yale are in the film; and I'm fairly certain (though guessing) that would be Eli Newberger.

The only 1955 recording of Don's in the discographies I have seen is one for Blue Note: "Five Impressions Of Color - Gil Mellé Quintet With Don Butterfield": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=alPKEiPvaSs

That doc looks cool. I'll check it out. That recording is cool, too, thanks!

jazzhot.netstates "LP 1956. Don Butterfield Sextet, Columbia 919"

enciclopediadeljazz.wordpress.com states "(Columbia) New York, 1956. (Atlantic) New York, 1957."

I imagine that these LPs are buried in some record collection somewhere.

We should try to get those digitized before they're lost in the sands of time...

For a couple of clips from the Don Butterfield Sextet album, go to "This is Jazz", Leonard Bernstein, part (side) II (available on Amazon to stream or buy as mp3). There are two short clips at 11:00 to 12:15, featuring Teo Macero on tenor.
