Take Five is the title of a successful jazz tune by the Dave Brubeck Quartet. It was recorded in 1959 by Paul Desmond for the album Time Out, released that year, at CBS 30th Street Studio in New York City.

The Dave Brubeck Quartet was one of the groups in the late '50's that made the transition from Bop and other jazz styles of the day to helping develop what became the genre "Cool Jazz." How do you get Paul Desmond's sax tone? A Selmer sax, 2 1/2 reed (when harder reeds were popular for be-bop and other work) and lots of technique and breath support. You can't play those high register diatonic and chromatic melodies without knowing all your side keys, all your auxillary keys, and alternate fingerings so nothing "blurps" in the middle of a phrase, [example] like going from a B to a C or vice versa using the middle right hand side key, which is smooth, instead of trying to flip your left hand 1st and 2nd fingers, which you just can't do without a blurp.
