Anybody who isn’t paid by Yamaha try this thing?

The only video of it being played so far is by Aaron Tindall but Blake Cooper apparently was playing it for over a year in soundtracks before this.

They say it’s “accessibly priced” but their website, along with a bunch of marketing BS, has it listed at a whopping 17K. Wonder what actual pricing will be though.

As expected from Yamaha, it’s incredibly easy to play and the intonation is very good. I really liked the secondary main tuning slide on the backside of the tuba.

It may be the right horn for the right player. The sound wasn’t my preferred flavor but it is objectively a good instrument.

From their website, "The YBB-623 and YCB-623 are the first tubas in the world to provide a Secondary main tuning slide." Marzan anyone???
It looks to be something in the flavor of the 4/4 Nirschl, maybe?
I would to be curious to know more, looks interesting even though I am not in the market.

This is just an incredibly poorly worded way of saying second *manipulatable* main side. It is up with fourth and and first slide and all.

What are the specs on this horn? Bore, bell diameter, 4/4-6/4 etc.

They call it a 4/4 horn but I suspect it’s similar to the MW 3225 and could easily be called a 5/4

I just saw on Dillon's it's out of stock but is listed around $12K. There's a LOT of used options out there for this price or less. I wouldn't call $12K accessibly priced. For a brand new horn, however, it's fair.

FWIW, it's not a 5/4. If you're basing 5/4 off of horns like the M-W 5450 and B&S Pt6(P) like I am, then it's squarely in the 4/4 size class.

A recent Jim Self Facebook post says there was a prototype of this from 2002. The rumors that this has been in production for many many years seem to be completely true.

If you google YCB623 in Japanese, there is a photo taken at an exhibit from 2007, that seems to be a prototype - which looks actually quite different (it's not my blog and photo, so I will copy a link below):　http://blog.livedoor.jp/marutuba3099/ar ... 63675.html

It says the prototype-then was based on YFB822, so many things must have changed since then. YCB623 is not yet sold here in Japan, so we cannot try it for a while (apparently, same thing happened for YCB822 in the 1990s).
