I was particularly struck by the Vals Venezolano. What arrangement did you use? Is it available?

Upon listening to one sound byte, my jaw dropped. After one more, I hit the paypal link.

Out of total randomness, James Woodward happens to be the theory T.A. for my class, I don't have any headphones with me but how does the piece sound?

Alan has clearly marked (with the help of his very talented layout, logo, AND website designer Jason Koi...yeah Jason!) that he used the new Miraphone Firebird F Tuba with the GW Alan Baer F Tuba mouthpiece. There is even a picture of him holding the tuba in the insert. Way to go on the new CD Alan!

Got my cd only a few days after placing my order....fastest turn around EVER!

I must say that I am very impressed with this new recording. The choice of repertoire is wonderful as well as the flawless and inspiring execution by both Alan Baer and Brad Haag.

I look forward to hearing much more from Mr. Baer in the future.

I received the CD a couple of days ago and it is indeed a "must own".

There is also no doubt that he used the Miraphone 281, it not only says so in the liner notes, but there is a picture of the 281 on the cover of the CD and another picture in the liner notes of Alan Baer holding the 281.

Also, the liner notes give credit to Ivan Giddings and G&W Mouthpiecs.

This is a stunning CD. I got mine the other day and I've already listened to it twice. It's not hard to understand why Al holds the chair that he does!

I have been really interested in these new Miraphone F tubas, so I looked at the pictures of the instruments pretty closely. There are three different Miraphones in the photos in the CD liner notes.

1) The cover has a six-valve 281, and looks like the same horn that is for sale at the Brasswind.

2) The photo where Al is wearing a black shirt looks like a very different horn. The first valve slide is much narrower than the 281 on the cover, and it only has five valves. Is this a prototype, or is the production 5-valve horn really different from the six-valve horn?

3) The close-up where Al is wearing a white bow tie looks like yet another instrument - the leadpipe seems to wrap very differently than either of the 281's and the bell is a lot larger. Is this a Miraphone CC?

There is also a fourth "picture" of a Miraphone F that I'm curious about. In the broadcast of the Mahler 1st last week, Al used what looked like a 5-valve 281 with no lacquer. It also appeared to have the narrow first valve slide, so is this the same horn that is in the "black shirt photo" in the CD liner, minus the lacquer? That was an awesome Mahler 1, and Al and Harwood sounded fabulous together.

OK, enough questions. Hopefully Al can chime in and make a few comments - I don't have an email address for him or I would have emailed him directly.

I'm going to have to find a 281 to try. I liked the previous generation Miraphone F, but it had some intonation problems I couldn't get past. Word is that the 281 doesn't have those problems.

Hi All,
Here is the story about the horns. The two F's, the one on the cover and the one in the booklet are both 281 F tubas. One is a 5 valver and the other is a 6 valve. There were changes made after the photo on the cover was taken, the instrument on the inside has the current wrap and 1st valve slide used. The horn used on the Mahler is ALSO a 281. This is the prototype 6 valve that I used on the CD. Finally, the larger horn in the CD booklet is the lacquered prototype 1291.

...kinda like Jon Sass's Cd, PT-606 on the cover, PT-20 shown inside and being played on

For anyone who has been asking about the Vals Venezolano track on the CD - it is available in certain formats through International Opus.
It was written as a middle movement of a woodwind Quintet called "Aires Tropicales". You can get Vals Venezolano along with another tune called "Contradanza". Paquito DiRivera has arranged it for several different instruments. Here is the link:
