Use different mouthpieces for different size tubas?

Post by willako »

Hi,
I use a Besson 3-valve compensating Eb and an old rebuilt 3/4 Mahillon Eb tuba.
Would you use a different mouthpiece for each tuba, or just go ahead and use the one for the Besson (Wick 3)? I have a G81 that sounds better on the Mahillon than the Wick 3 does. (I have been trying to find/buy another G81)
Thanks for any suggestions. Bill.

Use what sounds best and feels best to you on each. For some people/horns, that's one mouthpiece. For others, it's a different mouthpiece for each horn. For others, it's several different mouthpieces per horn, depending on the music being played.

I've owned five different tubas over the years. I tried a lot of different mouthpieces with each when I got them. I ended up using a total of three mouthpieces for the lot.

Thanks a lot. I appreciate your advice. People say always use the same mouthpiece for playing consistency, but I do like a great sound. Bill

I use a different mouthpiece for each of my horns. I do know there are some people who also use different mouthpieces, but they insist on having the same rim diameter on all of them for consistency.
