Remembering Barrie Perrins

Some of you youngsters may not know that name but Barrie was a legend from the late 50's through to the 80's. He toured most of Europe and even the USA way back in 1962. (If anyone has any details of that trip I would like to know).

He was Euphonium Champion of G.B. in 1964, 69, 70 & 71 and was euphonium tutor to the NYBB of Switzerland.

He was in Hendon at the same time I was in Hanwell and was one of the great characters of banding. I received some old recordings via one of his old school chums and his widow and have put these onto a CD;

Recordings of live performances in Holland & Switzerland, circa 1968. With orchestra;

Unaccompanied, following a Hendon band rehearsal, recorded on reel tape by Len Atter in 1962;

I admit I was not familiar with this player. What great playing though!

The unaccompanied "Carnival De Venice" is great (1962 is before I was born), and "Facilita" is amazing (I was startled by the applause at the end - that was live?!).

Euphonium players ought to take Charley up on his offer here if you haven't already. This is some good stuff.

Anyone know where I might find out about his trip the States in 1962?
I believe it may have had something to do with Glenn Call.

I'm looking to do another of some vintage UK players of the 50's & 60's in the near future.
