I'm not a lawyer, but I believe it is illegal for a private individual to run a raffle for profit. I have heard stories of individuals selling houses this way, but there were some limitations on the sale in some way. I used to run a 50/50 raffle for a religious organization and we had to get a permit from our town and in order to get the permit we needed to certify that the proceeds were for a non-profit organziation. These types of laws vary by jurisdiction within State, and over the internet it's hard to police, but you might want to investigate a little before trying something like this.

I'm not saying that it is or isn't legal, just a warning to check into it. Of course, there's always the expression that "it's easier to get forgiveness than permission," but there's also the expression that "ignorance of the law is not a defense."
