Brass with Choir

Post by Steve Marcus »

What compositions and arrangements are there for brass ensemble and vocal choir (preferably for general use, not specifically Christmas or Easter)? Who publishes them, and where can they be purchased?

John Rutter's Gloria is already under consideration. Any others?

I don't know what kind of brass ensemble you're talking about, but I think Daniel Pinkham has written several pieces for various brass groups and choir. He has a webpage:

Check out Norman Dello Joio: To Saint Cecilia. I played/recorded this piece among others and found it quite rewarding. We also played a couple Stephen Paulus pieces that were nice as well.

At age 16,I played with 8 other trumpets doing four part harmony with an organ with pipes thru the ceiling and 6 keyboards. This was in the choir loft. On the chapel floor were 400 Benedictine monks singing Gregorian chant. The accoustics were very live and the experience unforgettable.
This happened at St. Bernard Monastery in Cullman,Alabama every Sunday back in 1958.

Steve,

You might want to also check out Brassworks 4 Publishing. Interesting catalogue that now includes music by Barton Cummings.

We've done some stuff by Michael Burkhardt. It's OK stuff.

You can browse the music sites maintained by Finale and Sibelius. For example:

Some of the music is good, and some of the good music is free. Free is good. I like free.
