I just noticed that since I put the bell on the instrument and set up the neck-and-bits (per discussions in threads from the past) you can see from this picture that this person would have absolutely no problem wearing any sort of band hat (including a shako) while playing this instrument.

Amen, brother. "Back In Black" is a good workout. Good sousaphone song, bottom note is low E. Nice warmup for "Fountains Of Rome."

ACDC rox. The band is so classic -- recent shirt sitings show that good rock never dies.

Unfortunately, some band directors think school bands are little drum corps and try to copy things that are just not appropriate.

Bands these days need more shiny vintage sousas and more ACDC. Bloke's got it all right!!

YES, she's my sister, and dont make me kick your a$$

She's a great bass player -- and a big supporter of OURS -- in interviews she says her biggest musical influence is tuba playing (seriously). She's recently entered the limelight quite a bit (world tours, asked by MTV to be in their next reality show, playing with a grammy nominated band... ) As her proud big brother, I have to brag about her every time I get!

Plus, she wears ACDC t-shirts, which makes her COOL, which is what the disruptive tangent in this thread was about!

Back to our regularly scheduled discussion of shiny restored sousaphones.

The first thing I notice is the kid carrying the Ibanez bass in the background

I guess I find it odd that there would be bass in a marching band, but maybe that's just because ours never had one.

I am within a year of your age and also have heel pain that I have been dealing with for about a year. Yours is most likely plantar fasciitis as described here:

At one time this was thought to be the same as a heel spur, but now they are considered distinct issues. A heel spur refers to extra bone while plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of a ligament. The treatment for each is very different. I have both so unfortunately have too much experience with this. I have found stretching the ligament by "pointing" my heel when not standing, or leaning forward from the ankles when standing has increased flexibility and decreased the pain.

To follow up on what JohnH said about drum corps' setting the standard for pagentry: absolutely! It's far better than some of this crappy freestyle dancing/convulsing that is being done by a LOT of bands. Just my $.02

Both my 7-8 grade orchestra and high school orchestra use electric bass instead of a bowed double bass. I don't like it, but the school does not own a string bass nor do we have the means to purchase one at this time. Fortunately, I have a 6th grader who is renting his own ($$$) and is doing quite well; I hope he will be staying around for a while.

Oh, and I had to convince most of the kids at the start of the year that they cannot play electric guitar, synthesizer, or drumset in orchestra, despite what has been going on for the last ten years. I actually wanted a real band / orchestra! go figure. At least my drumline-oriented pep band has been going over well - instead of the extension cord and amp fiasco they used to have.

P.S. We have Zero low or mid brass players in the entire school.
