hey,
Mike Finn sent me a line of his moutpieces (all of 'em!) to try out and let other folks come by my place and check them out. I personally own most of the G&W line of mpc's and Ivan is sending me the rest of them soon. Me and Andy Smith came up with the idea of having some folks send us some stuff to try out and let our friends try out to let people here in the South East so that they could make informed purchases and really find something that matches their play style, horn etc... We are going to have a geek night soon, complete with duets, checking out MPC's listening to tuba music, watching tuba videos etc.... I'll update everyone when as to when that is going to happen. But, mike has so graciously lent these MPC's to me for about a month, so if anyone is here in town (or will be coming through) and wants to try out Mike and Ivan's stuff send me a PM and we'll get together. Both these guys have been super to talk with and both make great MPC's that everyone should have the opportunity to try out with their horn.

Thank you for your e-mail about the SSH. There is a Sidey SSH mouthpiece (stainless helleberg design) on the way to you to trial til the end of the year in your mouthpiece & equipment geek night project as well. Sounds like a good idea to allow area tubists the chance to see what works best for themselves all in one place.

WOAH, A Sidey mouthpiece. According to the specs on your website...

Rim Inner Diameter 33.46 mm 1.317 inch

...it appears to be a good bit larger than a standard Conn Helleberg. In fact it is the exact same inner diameter as my PT88. Very interesting!!!!

Is there are "Try-before-you-buy" kind of program??? I'm flat broke....but I want one.

Quite frankly I was extremely shocked by the dimmensions that were spit out for the rim as I would not have dreamed it was that large. I have never felt comfortable with any rim larger than the 33mm size along the lines of the PT-50 or Laskey 30H at all. Even a Loud 33.2 rim seemed huge to me. All I can think is that the combination of the SSH thinner rim width, with the SSH edge being more of a sharper drop off than a more gradual slope seen on other mouthpieces, makes the SSH feel and also respond with the control of a smaller rim size mouthpiece.

I also can sure relate to being broke. Choosing to be both a tubist and a cattleman are not the most lucrative ways to make a living these days! Perhaps you and others in the Southeast can swing over to Atlanta for one of Bill & Andys Tuba Equipment Geek nights to give the mouthpiece a comparison with many other brands and models that they are going to have available in one place for testing.

They will have an SSH there to blow on until the first part of the new year for anyone from in, around, or visiting the Atlanta area. I think it is a great idea to find what really works for individuals.

Andy and I went to Ithaca College together. We haven't seen each other in a few years. I wouldn't mind a visit, BUT I have to find the time to get to Atlanta.

Kudos to Bill and Andy for taking the time and energy to make all these mouthpieces available to folks to try out. What a great opportunity!
