When I first played the Srauss 1st Horn Concerto, I was playing on a CC tuba. I have performed it since on BOTH BBb and F tuba, and it seems to "lay well'' on both. It is simply a concerto that is so well written and idiomatic that it works well on ANY of the tubas, bass or contrabass. I suppose that ideally one would play it on Eb tuba, though I've never personally done so. The Strauss 1st Horkonzert was for many years (at least into the mid seventies) considered "standard repertoire" at most any German tuba audition. I have been told by an older German tubaist that actually KNEW Strauss that Strauss had actually given his "blessing" in this regard - recognizing it's suitability for tuba, and endorsing it's use one octave lower. It is one "transcription" that you can play without any need of an apology, and should work well on any tuba you should choose to play it on.

I have played both Struass 1 and 2 on Eb tuba. It works very well. There is, in the King catalog, a transcription for concert band of Strauss 1 available with a bass clef tuba part.

Well, I haven't tried it on tuba. But do you know what I DO like on tuba? I like the Brahams horn trio; it is easier on F tuba than it is on horn, and it sounds cool. Now if I could just talk a pianist and violinist into doing it with me.....
