First off, Congrats on getting to a great work. Tuba players tend to overlook the music of Dvorak because it isn't flashy, but it sure is pretty stuff. That being said I would use a big tuba. As Joe said, the tuba is the predominant bass voice, so the bigger the better. I have played this a couple of times and used an Alex and Rudy respectively. If you have the Torchinsky book heed his warnings well, there are many places in this piece that can trip you up. There is a great recording with Jiri Belahivek(I KNOW I butchered the last name) with the Czech Philharmonic. It is benchmark in every way. Good luck and enjoy.

My opinion is to use the tuba that sounds best with your orchestra. Every orchestra that I have played in had a different sound and different musical concepts, so make the call based on your own judgement and most likely no one will argue.

That said, when I played this composition I used my Alexander 163 CC and would most likely use it again. Whatever tuba that you use; you will alter the approach to fit the piece, conductor's wishes, and the orchestra.

best of luck and have have fun with a very nice symphony,
Mark
