I'm looking for a recording device in the up to 350$ range (USD), does anyone have any suggestions for one ?
i dont care if it has a built in microphone or any of the other possibilites, as long as it not hard to handle and has good recording quality for a tuba player, id like to hear about it.

Thanks Alot!

Most digital recorders intended for recording music will allow you select the quality of sound you want. Higher quality uses more memory or hard drive space. At the highest quality, the microphones will be the main factor in how good the recording is. A lot of low cost mics will do a decent job from around 80 Hz on up. For those fundamental tones in the cellar, better mics are required.

Depends on your goals. If you are just after checking pitch and time, then anything will work. If you are also wanting to check tone quality, then spend a little more and pic up some Sennheiser HD580 headphones and a hard drive based recording device which records WITHOUT compression.

Are you looking for a portable recording device or a stationary one? MiniDisc recorders are great for portable. I don't have an Ipod, but I hear that MD recorders have much better quality.

Fostex makes a nice little digital 8track for around 200-250 which records onto flash memory (less tempermental than a hard drive...lighter and less expensive to replace.) It has some nice features, including a usb port to connect it to your computer for any editing you may want to do
I believe the model is the MR-8 couple it with a decent set of mikes and you are set. It does have a built in mic, but I wouldnt use that for anything other than checking tempo
best of luck

Just for clarification, the only recording an iPod can do is with the voice recorder attachment, and it does just that. Voice. The recording quality is not good enough for music.

Love my iPod, just wouldn't think to record with it.

New gadget alert!
I haven't dug real deep into the details, but it looks like you can take this new gadget:
http://www.samash.com/catalog/showitem.asp?itemid=47187
And hook it up to the mixer of your choice; for example, this:

Plug in your favorite USB flash drive or card reader/writer to make a low cost recorder with phantom power.
