There is a small 'D' printed in the part. Trill down to D from Eb. The proper notation would have been to write a D with a trill on it then mark the Eb after. It is common to trill up diatonically unless otherwise marked!

Add my vote to Bloke's interpretation - although my vote may be due to the fact that for most of my Jr. High and High School years, the Bobo recording was the only solo professional tuba recording I had access to.

Still, there are worse people to copy interpretation from. I just think Eb-F-Eb-F . . . . . Eb-D-Eb sounds good in that spot. As far as the difficulty, everybody knows that every trill needs to be a lip trill anyway - if you can't, don't do a trill at all.

I may have to drag out my old crusty copy (as I haven't performed this piece in well over 20 years), but isn't that "D" a grace note (at the end of the Eb-F trill)?

bloke "thinking tuba players, as a group, aren't the most experienced at interpreting ornamentation - whether Baroque, Rococco, or modern"
The grace note would have not been witten in parentheses (probably). Of course, all is open to interpretation, but the notation seems to indicate Eb-D trill, resolving up to F.

Have fun playing it!!
