DAN'S "THE MAN" OBERLOH

I took delivery of Yamaha YEB-321S Eb tuba yesterday that was sold to me by Dan Oberloh.

Could I have gotten one cheaper? Yes. Would it have been as nice as the one I got from Dan? I'm not sure, but I doubt it.

There have a few of these out on the auction site of late. I also received a couple of PMs in response to a feeler I put out here some weeks ago. Please note, I mean no disrespect to anyone selling on Ebay or through other means, but I will admit to being a highly risk averse chicken. For me, going through a dealer with a known reputation for quality and honesty is worth paying a bit more.

From the moment I opened the case, I could see Dan's handiwork. The horn was buffed and polished like new and carried the fragrance of fresh polish, valve oil, and slide grease. Even the case looked vacumed. There are new springs and felts and the valves feel great. If anything, Dan understated the condition of this horn.

I found this horn to be very free blowing and making a lot of sound for its size. I tried with a 24AW and a Bobo Solo replica mp. I will need more time to fully get to know the horn but am quite impressed.

There's been a lot of talk about Ebs of late. For my money, the YEB-321S is a great value for someone looking for a first Eb. YMMV.

Thanks Dan O.

Does anyone have any mp suggestions for this specific horn. Yamaha ships it with a 66D4 which I am told is similar to the Bach 24AW. In my VERY limited face time with the horn, it seems that my 24AW seems to work better than the Bobo solo, but this is very preliminary.

Also, does anyone know what gig bag might fit. Back on some old TubeNet thread from wayyy back, it was written that a Cronkhite case made for the Cerveny Piggy would fit.

Anyway, I'm going off to my mom's to live off the fat of the land for a few days (like I really need it). Thanksgiving wishes to all the Tubers and Euphers here.

I bought an Eb King off E-bay. Schmidt's music in Pensacola recommended a Shilke 66 and it did fine. I bought a Kelly 24AW to combat allergies and I finally got used to lack of edge on my sound-due to the plastic but I like the way it slots high and low.
Enjoy your nice tuber!

The YEB-321 will work well with a variety of mpcs. I've gone as big as the larger Conn Helleberg with my 381 (5V version of the same horn). I also use a 7B and presently have a Schilke Helleberg (the one slightly smaller than the 7B). I'm sure, therefore that a Wick 3L, 2L or even a 1L would also work, as would a 24AW, a Bach 18, or probably even a Bach 12. I don't think I've used any of the PT "German" bowl-shaped mpcs with it. Neither have I tried my Bach 7 Megatone -- I don't want the horn to tip over when it's sitting on its bell .....

My conclusions -- it's hard to go wrong with this tuba. I do suspect you'd want to check your upper register intonation with a tuner when selecting a larger volume displacement mpc, just to be safe.

Enjoy,

I have the same horn, bought mine from Bloke, and I could say equally nice things about him. I love the horn, agreed, it's a nice Eb, it really is. I played on a much smaller 3v Eb before this one.

MPC-I use a Jim Self, it seems to do what I want, and has a nice tone. Have tried larger mpc's, but didn't feel they had the sweet sound.

Congrats on the purchase.

Yes, thanks again for the delivery: I got the delivery, got to meet you, and you got a chance to toot on the L&H. I still think about it sometimes when I drive past that White Hen, how people must have wondered what we were up too, probably looked like a drug deal in progress until you started playing. Last summer I was on the side of the road, and a police officer came up to the window, asked me what I was doing, and asked me to step out the car when he saw my mouthpiece with two sousa bits-it looked like drug paraphanalia to him, until I demonstrated what it was really for.

But back to the horn, I took your advice, and I love the sound of the horn, it'a a nice size horn to drag out to my nephew's house for lessons, easier to travel with than a BBb, and the Yamaha case works great, couldn't imagine using anything else-especially not a dent bag.

Thanks again

Personally, I find it a lot easier to freebase out of a flute headstock.

Now, maybe it's me, but that just sounds a whole lot MORE like drug paraphanalia that "tuning bits"...
