I seem to remember somebody doing a "rotor-ectomy" (with, apparently, good results) on a Conn 5xJ ... would that work?

wondering if the original question really meant to include no "fifth" valve rotor in the absolutley No rotor requirement....

Do a search on Sam Gnagey. He reassembles horns similar in concept to the Conn 5xJ that have a high playability-to-appearance ratio, and thus are affordable.

CC tuba under $6,000 with 5 valves (4 piston + Trigger)
Try a Kalison DS- from the Tuba Exchange. I think they are going for around $5899ish right now. It's not a Hirs. by any stretch of the imagination, but it is very comparable to other horns 1k higher.

Do a search for this horn; I have seen a thread or two on these before. Some people love them, some people hate them. From what I can tell, the craftmanship varys greatly from horn to horn. Some are spectacular, some are horrible. I found one that works for me. As far as projection goes, I have no problem being heard in my 90 piece youth orchestra, but then again, it is a youth orchestra. I read on TubaNews that this horn has a bright sound- mine doesn't, and it is probably not me.
Bonus: There are many great used CC tubas for sale under $6,000!! Try one!

Holy are those Thein instruments ever expensive! 22,000 euros? Musn't be much out there more expensive... are they "the best?"
