Sophie wrote:What is the most important value that music education can instill in children? Why is music education important to students... how does it help in everyday situations?
Serious answer:
This is a question usually asked by the FIRST music education course a college student must take. IF YOU YOURSELF CANNOT HONESTLY ANSWER THIS, THEN SERIOUSLY CONSIDER ANOTHER PROFESSION.

Sorry for the harsh answer, but I spent the last several months trying to clean up a huge mess left by the last so-called music teacher who did not have a clue. There are many other jobs out there that pay a whole lot better. If you don't have a heart for teaching music, leave it for one of your classmates who does.

This may need plenty of re-wording... 2:30am!

Music education helps children in multiple aspects of their lives. You would be very interested to know that those highschool students who play musical instruments well, also do well in their adacemic areas.

Music is not just an art - it is part math and science. Music deals with the mathematical aspect - harmony and intervals are very mathematic in nature. The science part is mainly physics - ie sound waves, etc. Of course, music does not directly help with math and science, but it develops the mind to make the learning of math and science easier.

Music is also enjoyable. Children learn how to express themselves through music. It usually releases the stress that most young adults face in this crazy world we live in. Students in the band usually "look forward" to going to band practice, and giving kids a reason (besides punishment if they don't) to get up to go to school is excellent for kids. This is similar to sports.

Music involves other people. Music teaches kids to interact with others. Kids learn how to communicate their ideas through their playing, as well as discussion about music with others. They learn teamwork and a sense of being part of a "community."

Music develops listening skills. Kids learn to REALLY listen while playing music. They learn to listen critically to themselves and others. They also learn how to correctly respond to what they hear.
