Hi - I'm currently in the process of planning a euphonium recital for April 2006. I have a basic idea of what I want to play, but I also want to play a piece on my double-bell euphonium.

Does anyone know of any solos (other than Carnival of Venice) that work well on double-bell euphonium, and where I might be able to buy recordings of them.

Most of the 'Golden Age' solos are more than appropriate to perform on the double bell. These include, but not limited to:

- anything by Arthur Pryor
- anything by Herbert L. Clarke
- any of the Bellstedt solos
- any of the Arban solos
- most theme and variation sets not listed

There are also some modern repertoire that was actually designed for the double bell euphonium. Most notibly in the repertoire is the Concert Variations by Jan Bach. This piece is published by the Tuba Euphonium Press, and was recorded by Mark Fisher on his EUFish CD release a few years back.

You might also look at some of Neal Corwell's recent compositions. I recently spent some time with him, and he has a few new pieces out that he performs on the double bell euphonium.

It's good to hear someone performing repertoire on the classic instrument, but I do have to agree - there needs to be more than our da-da-ga solos to entertain the audience.

I once did Schidt's Battle Mussic (Galliard Battalica as the Canadian Brass calls it). The quintete arrangement has two trumpets doing the solo - I redid it for the double bell euphonium with the trumpet part coming out of a different bell. Works great!

I loved playing Carnival on my DBE, especially the implied two part stuff (solo and accompaniment) in the last variation using the two bells. But if you need something different, why not use the master, Simone Mantia: Believe Me if All Those Enduring Young Charms

I have a student doing Beautiful Colorado on the Double Bell. As stated earlier, they work great for the old standards (Arban, Clarke, etc) where there is a lot of repeated flourishy passages.

Do you know if there is a recording of Beautiful Colorado for double-bell euphonium? It's a strange coincidence because that's one of the pieces I plan on doing lol. I just wouldn't be sure when to use (and not use) the small bell.

I'm going to look into some other pieces too - since I already did a recital on trombone (just got done with it an hour and a half ago lol) I am not required to do a euphonium recital (but I am doing one anyways). Perhaps I could turn it into a double-bell euphonium recital (that's stretching it a little though, I think).
