The high C's can be a little difficult for a student in grade 8, especially if he is playing on a BBb tuba. How long has he been playing? This piece requires a fair amount of stamina.

Well, I am a firm believer that if you're going to do something, do it well. An audition panel and an audience will be much more impressed with an easy piece done well than with a difficult piece done poorly.

I would recommend that the student try playing it, but have an easier piece as a back-up if the Haddad doesn't work out, because it could be too difficult. It's hard to say without knowing the students' abilities.

I would give hartley suite a shot. I played that in 8th grade. I put in lots of time, but i felt great when i had it finished.....also air and bourree. I didn't discover that song until freshman year. But I could play the slow first movement really well so it boosted my confidence and got me to work hard with a good attitude on the second movement. The first movements pretty boring.......but i have a blast playing the second movement. Also The Happy Hippo by Norman Ward is pretty easy and fun to play as long as he has a firm grasp on triplets. Through middle school my favorite book was the Canadian Brass tuba solo books. Some in there are challenging, some are very simple.....but I had a blast with those books

I did it at the beginning of ninth grade. It was a challenge, but not something in any way out of reach and I think I ended up doing a decent job with it. Try working on it and seeing if he gets anywhere.
