Brass and chorus

Post by mbeastep »

I'm looking for suggestions for good music for chorus and larger brass ensemble (orchestral brass instruments). Things like Gabrieli, Dello Joio, Schutz. If you know sources, that's all the better. Thanks!

Other than the fact there are no horns, Rutter's "Gloria" is a great piece. It calls for 4 trumpets, 3 trombones, and tuba along with organ, 2 percussion, and chorus. VERY great, energetic work which I actually just played recently.

I know Schütz more than the others, even if I have played/conducted quite a bit of the Gabrielli’s, uncle end nephew.

The distinguishing between vocal and instrumental music was less sharp back then. Only the WORD had to be prominent. Today’s choirs often are very large, so that this profoundly important balance aspect may be kept even with a heavy dosis of brasses sprinkled into the equation.

Schütz wrote several pieces for 4 or 5 voiced double choirs.

The two choirs may be equal or the 2nd one may be an echo choir. Depending on that it should be possible to distribute the brasses properly, even if it may take some writing out of parts.

If you have a very good solo horn player, then the horn quartet just about can cover the "loud" 1st choir supported by 1-2 trumpets, 1-2 trombones, and the tuba in the 16' octave.

The echo choir then can consist of high quality solo voices supported by discrete soloistic trumpets and trombones (clarity is paramount).

The combined mediae of choir and brass also can perform some Russian liturgical music with great results.

My uploading of free music in .pdf format holds this:

Tchaikovsky - Liturgical music.
Liturgical music by Peter Tchaikovsky edited for various instrumental constellations by Klaus Bjerre (brasses in Bb, F, Eb, and C concert notations, clarinets in Bb and Eb, string quartet, recorder quartet, and flute choir). So far 6 chorales out of a longer series.

A good librarian will be able to find the choir scores. A good conductor will be able to match my editions with the one for the choirs. I have pulled a few tricks to avoid claims of copyright violations. They are purely formal and don’t concern the musical contents.
