I enjoy my 188 but right now it would have to be my YFB-822. So much fun to play, even more now since I had it serviced and some modifications done to it.

Mirafone 190

Post by poomshanka »

Yep, it's Tommy Johnson's old 190 CC. Definitely an odd bird, as I only know (for sure) of one other, and it's the prototype. That collection of Mirafones is from the community band I play in...

Various comparison pixx can be found here...

Truly an amazing instrument. You can hear Tommy lighting it up on E.T. (remastered score that was recently re-issued), Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (hard to find, great score, lame movie), The Last Starfighter. It has a sound that makes a room shake, but in a clear, Miraphone-ish way.

I really haven't found any horns that I'd prefer to play to these, so I guess I'd call them my favorites.

Hey Ike,

I can't say I blame you... it's a fantastic tuba! I hope the piggy is treating you well enough, as well as your new bass bow. I'm looking forward to seeing pics of the piggy all prettied up. :-)

Take care,
Chuck

Sweet.

As a part-time player, I certainly don't do the horn justice. It can be a real handful, but when you dig in the spurs, it produces a fairly unique sound - overwhelming if I want it to be.

Not for everyone, and certainly not without its quirks. Anytime you're in SoCal, you're more than welcome to stop by for a honk...

The Piggy is doing great. I'm using an old Helleberg with it now and it just blossoms! Haven't had time to finish stripping the horn yet, but I'll send a pic when it's done. Haven't had the bow in hand very much lately, on the road a lot. It's a great one though.
