Boards often seem to want to play hardball, because musicians are not perceived as having any "business sense". We had to play in Wilmington once for over a year once without a contract, and then when the board started to make similar noises we had Federal Mediation.
Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?
