Tuba Band Excerpt Book

Dear All,

While at the DC Army Tuba Convention, I had many (MANY) requests for a Tuba Band Excerpt Book. I have decided to take on the challenge!

I think this is something that could be very valuable to any player who will be taking auditions for Band positions around the world.

My next step is collecting which pieces should be in the book and then working on copyright permissions. Sometimes time consuming and expensive.

Here is where I need the TubeNet member shelp:

Please send or post which pieces you think should be included in the book.

I will also be contacting all of the service bands to see if I can find out what pieces have appeared on their audition lists over the past 5 years or so.

Thanks to all who stopped by the booth in DC and said "Hi", purchased music, etc.!

Thank you for any suggestions in advance,

Hopefully, Sean and some of the other guys from the military bands will tell you what has been on their audition lists.

Carl Fischer actually put out an excerpt book that was available until before World War II. It had virtually every major original band work and transcription that Carl Fischer or any of its affiliated companies published (no marches). I have seen this book but the guy who had it wouldn't give it up.

For a study of marches on the small sheet, get your own copy of Carl Fischer's Pass in Review book.

This looks expensive to me. I am thinking about the legal aspects.

Right now I am basically looking for pieces that would most likely be on an audition. They can be quite obscure. I know many of them are or very well known (Stars and Stripes comes to mind).

After a few days of the thread, I will collect them all and then see what I can do in terms of copyrights, etc. WIth some luck, I will get permission for many or all!

This is a great project.

While it is nice for those among us will be auditioning to have a body of literature like this. There are probably many more of us who will never audition for a service band but would love to have a collection of tuba excerpts from the great literature for band. Either to have something challenging to practice, or to reminisce about old pieces that we played in our younger days such as college and see if we can still play the part or to play along with CDs.

So please don't forget those of us who will never be auditioning for a service band spot.

Also will this be a print product or a CD like the Cherry Orchestra Excerpt CD?

Silly question, Brian, but I assume that we're talking standard concert band here and not brass band?

I am guessing it will be a print project. When it involves copyrights, most owners like to see hard copies of pieces. If the pieces were not under copyright I might consider a CD. Things can change and I am sure they will as I get into this!

I will do my best not to forget about the members of the list who will not be auditioning, but just like have the excerpts to play. This will depend on many things.

Yes. Just concert band. Not my cup of tea, but I am sure somone could make a Brass Band book as well! I am sure there would be many copyright issues with a book like that compared to a concert band book.

Unfortunately if you look close they don't offer a Tuba book. I have written them about once a year for the past 3 years (usually around the 1st of the year) telling them if they offered a tuba book I would be buying not only the Tuba books but the Flute, Euphonium and French Horn books as well (so the whole family could play along). Maybe one of these days they will offer a tuba book.

I think we need a second tuba renaissance. What d'y'all think?

(The first on was in the early 1970s, which began with the First International Tuba Symposium at Indiana University and a special tuba issue of the Instrumentalist magazine.)
