it should be good sooner then you expect, but i guess to get to know your new chops, you need to do some individual work with buzzing on a mouthpiece.
What happens after the braces are removed?

My son (17 y/o) has had his braces off for almost a year. Even with using his retainer at night, the pressure on his teeth from playing his euphonium has caused his teeth to start to move back. His orthodontist now wants to put the braces back on! He says that this often happens to young brass players. My son says "no way!". Has anyone who has had their braces off experienced this?

I got my braces off 3 days before state solo/ensemble contest. after callouses and marching band, i was so happy, but had the feeling that my teeth were swimming around in my mouth. i wore the retainer for the first few months while playing, then i noticed my teeth formed to my embrouchure, which felt a bit strange, but still looked good. that was 32 years ago, and today everything is still working fine.
