Trombones are cylindrical tubes, tubas are comical tubes,...

If you can hear yourself off the back wall, you're too loud!" -- unnamed but recently retired wind ensemble conductor

BONUS -- Great trombone quote
Referring to the final thematic statement by the trombones in the finale of Mahler 5th: "Trombones...when Mahler writes "uber alles" he is referring to the orchestra, not the entire state of New York!" --unnamed orchestra conductor

If there was a star of the evening it was the tuba player, Lee Tsarmaklis, whose solos at the beginning of the finale were a real wonder. Perfect slurs, articulation and phrasing.
Music Web International review of concert of Mahler 6 with London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Mark Elder. Not so often does a tuba player get picked out for such praise!!!

Q. Why is the tuba considered the hardest instrument to play?

A. Because you have to give them credit; it's a lot harder to read music when you're consistently drunk.

Just be aware where you play and drain your tuba. In some cold places it won’t go away:

The attachment spit-happens.jpg is no longer available
David Richoux wrote:

Why is the attachment "no longer available?" It was not questionable content, it was designed and published by me, it is tuba related...

edit: nevermind - it is back

While in a Brass Orchestral rep class, we're reading Mahler 5, we play some FF section and apparently the low brass was not loud enough for the liking of our (bass trombonist) conductor, "NO! that section is why you're here, that section is the entire point to you showing up tonight, again, and louder this time!" So myself, and the freshman bass bone next to me decide to give him what he wants, the conductor's reply this time:

"no, you two have just sent the world of low brass playing back 40 years, never do that again....ever"

A few years ago, I was at a large music store that sells a lot of different models of tubas. I was sitting in a room honking out whatever note (probably trying to play a low low B on a 4 valve Bb, I think) when the salesman comes running in.

"Oh, it's you."

Director: Clarinets, you are marked "piano"! You don't want to be louder than the tubas!
Tuba Player: Hey, if it's a contest, we'll win.

Heard at a community band rehearsal outside of Pittsburgh, PA. (As are others, not really famous, but certainly memorable.)
