Cheek problem

Hey everyone,

this past saturday I noticed a soreness in my left cheek. It would hurt when opening my mouth. Nothing huge. Sunday it got a lil worse and monday a lil more.

At first I thought maybe my wisdom teeth since they have not been removed yet(im 18) however. My teeth do not hurt, and my gums d not hurt at all. just my left cheek. Its like the muscle in there is bruised or something. I've noticed that when I open my mouth it gets to a point where i can't open anymore. If from that point i try to use my hands to open, it hurts pretty bad.

Anyone ever had/heard of this? It obviously is affecting my playing and making eatnig a painful time. Just the height needed to nromaly chew food is enough to inflict a good amount of pain.

I haven't been hit in my mouth recently, or any cuts that i can think of. and im not runing a fever.

I've got a appointment with a local dentist(im in college..not home) to try and get it checked out. But its really got me concerned. The only thing left that it may be is TMJ? but i've never been told i had that or an symptons by my dentist at home, whom i've seen in the past month.

Any ideas? Thanks guys,

Jacob

If your physical exam shows no problems, try changing mouthpieces for a couple of weeks and see if things don't improve some.

There are many facial nerves that cross the area where a tuba mouthpiece rests. You can irritate or pinch a nerve that can cause phantom pain anywhere around the mouth.

I had a similar experience to yours after playing on a 24AW for a couple of weeks. I could have sworn that I had an abcessed molar nowhere near where a mouthpiece rests. X-rays turned up nothing. I changed back to my old mouthiece and after about a week, the pain vanished completely.

I sold the 24AW.

Get better man. I would go to a maxillofacial doctor and get it REALLY checked out.

I went to a dentist today. I don't think they could really tell what it was for sure. They gave me some anti biotics and pain medicine and said if it doesn't clear up in a few days to come back.

They think its the wisdom teeth causing it, but since they are not sore in anyway and neither are my gums that doesn't make alot of sense.

As far as mouthpieces, I've had the same one over a year now and have not changed anything in my practice habits or anything.

Wes i'd play if it didn't hurt so bad, we all know i need it before my recital;x
