Why are tubas for sale so often listed with serial #'s with the last digit or two shown as X's?

So that you have enough of the number to date the instrument without being able to identify a specific instrument.

I've always been paranoid of that happening to me! You never know where a horn from ebay has been before...or a pawn shop.

I guess you could say they are X-RATED!;-)

Could be they don't know, either... they're waiting to see how well they sell before they go "liberate" them, or just add them on to the existing number!

(sorry, but I couldn't resist... )
