My wife is pursuing her doctorate in "Counseling Education and Supervision". She already has a Masters degree (4.0 ), but there were several other tracks that offered a combined masters and doctoral degree for those with only a Bachelor's. I have heard of this in other professions as well.

Is there anything similar in music where you enter with a Bachelor's and leave with a D.M.A.?

In most academic fields, students who get a doctorate pick up a master's along the way. But - the way it's done differs.

In some departments, you must already have a master's to enter the doctoral program. In others, you can enter the doctoral program directly, but there is usually a hurdle along the way that comes with a master's. Some doctoral students bail out early, usually at the point where they have eared a master's.

So....you should first decide what your ultimate goal is, and then talk to the specific department(s) you are interested in. There are no hard and fast rules.

Marty,a worse situation than the one you're in would be the one you're in plus 60-80k of non-bankruptable student loan debt.If you do this,you must find a place to do it for free or where they pay you.If you want to teach band,let me know.There are some nice situations out there.Do your masters over the summer while still getting a nice direct deposit from your school district....

I hear you. My SL payments are about $120 something a month - pretty reasonable. BUT, my wife already owes about $120,000 and only makes in the mid 20's per year. And, she currently has one of the better paying therapist jobs in the region. Hence her desire to get a doctorate so she can make more than a shift manager at Wendys.
