For three summers I tech'ed one of the most competitive H.S. marching bands in Tennessee. We did an intensive drum-corps style show. While I will agree that you can get away with having some weak players in the ranks, one person out of step or not in their position will still stick out like a sore thumb even when you have 120 musicians and several dozen color guard on the field.
It was because of this that we (unfortunately) spent so much time on drill compared to music. On the field there is nowhere to hide!

We had a 60 piece private school band. Most of our formations ended up with us in a tight group where we could be better heard. We had an arrangement of "Tea for Two" where my self and the other tuba player did a soft shoe dance while wearing sousaphones. It was a big hit.
