There are a few solos I found in a program notes book that looked interesting. Can anyone tell me if they are worth buying?

1. Canto VII for solo tuba - Samuel Adler
2. Sonata for Bass Tuba and Piano - Thomas Beversdorf (heard this one is great.
3. Tabu for Tuba - John Downey
4. The Devils Herald- Solo tuba, four horns and persussion - Richard Peaslee

Can't tell you anything about the other 3, but the Beversdorf seems to be a pretty standard piece. Its also fun to play.

Personally i don't think tabu for tuba is worth anyone's time... but the beversdorf is nice.

I purchased Canto VII for solo tuba by Samuel Adler and I must say it was the biggest waste of money for me. I'm not sure what you're looking for in a piece... it might be good for you.

It has lots of extended technique in it. This includes valve clicking, knocking on instrument with fingernails, stamping the foot, blowing air through instrument on specific syllables, flutter tonguing, glissandos, etc.

A lot of random notes and intervals. Strange rhythms and changing meter every measure. Very virtuosic writing - two octave jumps. Extreme register playing.

I definitely would be very picky about where I'd play this piece.

You'll definitely want to look at it before you buy it.

Another YES for the Beversdorf.

Make sure you have a good pianist though!

They are all worth getting and working out. Whether you want to play them for anyone is up to you.
