Hi all,

Way back in high school I was given a fun little arrangement of the Schumann tune The Jolly Peasant. I've been looking for the specific version with the sweet little cadenza that calls for triple tonguing. So far I haven't had any luck in finding it among the many, many arrangements currently available. I don't remember what translation it used for the title: farmer, peasant, happy, content....

Anyone out there know the one I'm talking about? I have a student with exactly the right sense of humour to pull it off and it's about the right level for him.

Mac Davis, who is a tuba player, is the Professor of Compostion at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. I studied with him when I was a student at that school (1989-82). I once played a recording of the Bill Bell arrangement of "The Happy Farmer Goes to Town" for him but he didn't make any comment. His piece came about because students in his composition classes are expected to write an arrangement of a Robert Schumann piece and this was one of Dr. Davis's examples.

I believe the piece you are talking about is The Jolly Farmer Goes to Town by Schumann/arranged by Bill Bell. It was published in 1937 (or 1938) by Carl Fischer and is currently out-of-print. The published version was for tuba and piano. I have several recordings of Mr. Bell playing this piece accompanied by band and orchestra. Needless to say, these recordings are also out-of-print.
