Hey folks- would any PT20P owners out there please offer their observations concerning the PT20p as an all-around horn. I am considering purchasing one and would like to know how it works as a large ensemble, quintet and solo instrument. I'm going to try a few at Custom Music in the next week or so but if you've been there, you know what kind of acoustic environment they have. Thanks in advance.

I've been using one in concert band and quintet settings for about 3 years now and I love the instrument. Inevitably there will be those that want to drag comparisons(sales pitches) of the 606 into this discussion. I'd rather not, it's an apples/oranges situation. The 20 appears to be the CC equivalent of a VMI 3301, having seen and played both side by side, I suspect the CC derived from the BBb.
One thing that may bother you is the ergonomics of the calve cluster. The 5th trigger is in a weird position and the pistons are rather far apart. This hasn't bothered me enough to be a problem, but several folks I know with smaller hands simply won't purchase this tuba for that reason.
It's a well made, easy to play tuba, lots of bracing and thick brass. But it rings very well. Watch you don't get one that has one pitch that rings longer than others. On 2 examples I tried, the F at the bottom of the staff would ring much longer than notes around it. The one I went with has this characteristic on a top of the staff C, but to a much lesser degree.
Great all around CC tuba.

I've used mine on broadway, in quintets, with songwriters, and cabaret shows, and it's been perfect for me. I mostly work as a bassist so a horn with the intonation that I don't have to work so hard for has been really great for me. I also needed to move my adjustable thumb ring a bit until I found the best place for my thumb, and from some posts I've read, I've wondered if not all of them had adjustable thumb rings. Anyway. Good Luck
Peace. ASG
