This is a very nice piece of music. It is written sorta in a baroque style which is kind of cool. Now, the tuba part by itself doesn't make much sense, but once you add the accompianment (or piano part) it all makes sense.

It's a fairly high part, much like the RVW. CC tuba will work on it, but an F tuba will probably make things easier.

One thing to note is that it is really short. All three movements add up to only about 7 minutes. I remember trying to do this on a concerto competition but was disqualified since it was too short. I have no idea what the string parts are like (but I've heard the piano part, they're probably not too hard). The key is string friendly.

Anthony Plog Nocturne (newish piece) is really nice

Jan Bach Quintet (for tuba and string quartet) $40 for all parts at tuba/euph press...very demanding piece for all players

David Baker (?) also tuba and string quartet, also very difficult...the name of it escapes me...possibly the composer too...piece was commissioned by Harvey Phillips

Arild Plau Concerto for Tuba and Strings, as mentioned above, beautiful piece, but expensive...Oystein Baadsviks website has many more pieces for tuba and stings as well (from his tuba carnival CD)

Actually, on OB's site its closer to $60 (including shipping.) The piece is worth the extra $$$ though, GREAT work. Its about the same length as the John Williams concerto.

OB kills it on his new disc.

Let's be clear here: that price of ~$60 is for the piano reduction and does not include the string parts.

A note about the Frackenpohl is that it's pretty short, very easy and just doesn't sound good. The last movement is unbelievably hokey. In my opinion.

You've got it right. The piece by David Baker is called Sonata for Tuba & String Quartet. It was recorded by Harvey Phillips on Golden Crest LP #CRS-4122; hopefully, it will be among the recordings to be released on CD as a result of Harvey's negotiations with the Galehouse family.
